Culinary Union Exhibition to Debut at UNLV

From December 5, 2014 through April 1, 2015  the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Public History program will open an exciting student-curated exhibit, “Line in the Sand: The People, Power and Progress of the Culinary Union.” The exhibition is held on the first floor gallery of the UNLV University’s Lied Library.

Who: UNLV Public History Program, Culinary and Bartenders Unions, UNLV University Libraries, the College of Liberal Arts, Nevada State Museum, and the Las Vegas News Bureau.

Where: First floor of UNLV University's Lied Library

For UNLV's Public History students, the integration of “thinking” and “doing” is at the heart of public history. Established in 2000, the public history program at UNLV blends theory and practice in innovative and unconventional ways. Our students learn to analyze and interpret history for the benefit of the very people who make it and live it.

Culinary Workers Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165, Nevada affiliates of UNITE HERE, represent over 55,000 workers in Las Vegas and Reno, including at most of casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. UNITE HERE represents 270,000 workers in gaming, hotel, and food service industries in North America.

In support of UNLV’s mission and shared values, the UNLV University Libraries contribute to and support learners as they discover, access, and use information effectively for academic success, research, and lifelong learning. The UNLV University Libraries define the new academic research library—bringing people and information together in innovative ways.

The mission of the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas is to inspire and educate a diverse public about the history and natural history of Nevada. To fulfill that mission, we collect, preserve, exhibit, and disseminate material that contributes to an understanding and appreciation of the state.

LVCVA's Las Vegas News Bureau works with news agencies to maximize exposure of news and events in Southern Nevada. The News Bureau captures photos and video of special events, entertainment, attractions, resorts and hotels in Las Vegas, and imagery of the Southern Nevada destinations. Our Las Vegas archive spans 65 years and is available to news media for editorial use. The News Bureau produces photo exhibitions on display locally in public buildings. The News Bureau shoots and distributes photos and b-roll of Las Vegas events, and maintains an archive of historical images for editorial use.
