BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

In the face of deportations, racist attacks from presidential candidates like Donald Trump, and stalled legislation for immigration reform, UNITE HERE’s Culinary Union and PLAN have been hosting citizenship fairs in Nevada since early March to help immigrants communities achieve greater voting power.

The upcoming fair will be the fourth and final citizenship application program held by the coalition. This will be the last chance for legal permanent residents of Nevada to apply for citizenship in time to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election. Approximately 95,935 legal permanent residents in Clark County are eligible to become citizens. The coalition has set the goal of helping 2,000+ Nevada immigrants become citizens and is well on its way to reaching its goal.

UNITE HERE is a labor union representing thousands of hospitality workers across North America. Culinary Workers Union Local 226, UNITE HERE’s largest affiliate, is the largest immigrant organization in the state. PLAN brings together diverse and potentially competing organizations into one cohesive force for social and environmental justice in Nevada.
