TENTATIVE AGREEEMENT REACHED WITH THE GOLDEN NUGGET LAS VEGAS

LAS VEGAS, NV – The Culinary and Bartenders Unions’ negotiating committee reached a tentative agreement for a new 5-year contract with the Golden Nugget Las Vegas on Wednesday. This deal comes nearly three weeks after union members at Downtown Las Vegas casinos, including the Golden Nugget, voted overwhelmingly to authorize strikes.

“As a single father, having a union contract ensures that I can take care of my son and that means so much to me,” said Burkey Rothenberger, a master cook at the Golden Nugget. “I will do whatever it takes to provide for my family.”

This is the first agreement the unions have reached with a Downtown Las Vegas casino since old contracts expired on June 1, 2013. The tentative agreement with the Golden Nugget follows settlements with MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, Riviera, Tropicana, Treasure Island, Stratosphere and the LVH on the Strip.

“I am pleased that we have reached an agreement with the Golden Nugget,” said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, Secretary-Treasurer of the Culinary Union. “This contract is a fair settlement which will continue to protect the health benefits, wages, and future of union families.”

“I’m relieved to have a contract after many hours of negotiations,” said Annette Wright, a pantry worker at the Golden Nugget. “But I know we aren’t done until every worker in Las Vegas is protected.”

The remaining unsettled properties in Downtown Las Vegas are: Fremont, Main Street Station, Four Queens, Binion’s, Plaza, Las Vegas Club, The D, El Cortez, and Golden Gate. The Culinary Union is also still working toward reaching a new contract with Brady Linen Services.

The Culinary and Bartenders Unions picketed in Downtown Las Vegas on Saturday, April 12, 2014. Union members from all unsettled properties have been signing up for strike benefits and strike picket shifts.

Union members voted on March 27, 2014 overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. The Union’s leadership now has the authority to call for a strike against any company, which hasn’t signed a new contract with the Unions, at any time.
