Union Members Vote to Protect Their Future
Thousands voted to support dues increase
Las Vegas, NV – Today, about 9,000 Culinary Union Local 226 members gathered at Cashman Field for a vote to increase dues in the event of a strike. The members overwhelmingly voted in support of raising dues with 92% of members voting yes.
“The results of tonight’s vote show that members understand how important union contracts are to all families in Las Vegas,” said Gloria Delgado, a housekeeper at the Rio. She continued by explaining, “I voted yes to make sure we can protect the opportunity to provide for our families.”
The vote would allow monthly union dues to be raised by $25 in the event of a strike. However, if members walk the strike picket line for four hours a month, the money would be refunded. Members also approved a permanent $4 increase to dues in 2014 and again in 2015. The permanent increases are largely to support new organizing. It is the first time since 2006 that such a vote has taken place.
