Workers in Downtown Las Vegas to Strike June 1

Members of the Culinary and Bartenders Unions at seven Downtown Las Vegas casinos will go on strike effective June 1, 2014 at 5am. The strike will last until a fair contract settlement is reached. Negotiations have been scheduled with all unsettled properties. 

What: Strikes at seven casinos in Downtown Las Vegas: The D, Four Queens, Binion’s, Plaza, Las Vegas Club, El Cortez*, and Golden Gate. Not affected are the casinos that have settled new contracts or have tentative agreements with the Union: Golden Nugget, Fremont, and Main Street Station.

*At the time of the release of this media advisory, the Unions were in negotiations with the El Cortez.

Who: Union members from the above properties will be on strike starting June 1.

When: Workers will go on strike at 5am on Sunday, June 1. A rally with Strip and Downtown workers is scheduled for 10am and 5pm on the same day.

Strike Day Visuals: Union members on strike in front of unsettled casinos in Downtown Las Vegas, strike picket signs at every entrance of the struck casinos, including on the Fremont Street Experience. Workers walking off the job at 5am will be joined by workers coming to the picket line.

Interviews before June 1: Spokespeople – both workers going on strike and other Union members who will support them with solidarity actions -- will be available on Wednesday, May 28 at the Culinary Union (1630 South Commerce Street) from 12-2pm. During this time, Downtown workers and their families will be making thousands of picket signs in preparation for the June 1 strike.

Union members from all unsettled properties have picketed in Downtown Las Vegas after contracts were terminated. They have also been signing up for strike benefits and strike picket shifts since the strike authorization vote on March 27. 

Culinary Workers Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165, Nevada affiliates of UNITE HERE, represent over 55,000 workers in Las Vegas and Reno, including at most of casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip and in Downtown Las Vegas.
