CULINARY UNION
REACHES TENTATIVE AGREEMENT
WITH TROPICANA HOTEL & CASINO
Today, the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, Bartenders
Union Local 165, and Tropicana Entertainment reached a tentative agreement on a
new collective bargaining agreement covering approximately 750 workers at the Tropicana
Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
The new tentative agreement was negotiated between
representatives of the Las Vegas Tropicana and a committee of rank-and-file
members of the Culinary and Bartenders Unions.
The tentative agreement will be presented for ratification by members of
the Culinary and Bartenders Unions employed at the Tropicana on Friday, August
22nd.
D. Taylor, the Culinary Union’s Secretary-Treasurer and
lead negotiator noted that, “We are thrilled that after so long, the Tropicana’s
negotiating committee was able to achieve its goal of protecting the ‘Las Vegas
Dream.’ Our Union’s members stood with
the Tropicana workers these last 15 months determined that no Las Vegas worker would be left behind. We were disappointed when the Nevada Gaming
Control Board would not take action against the former owner of the Tropicana,
but we are heartened that workers sticking together brought a solution. We commend Scott Butera and the new team at
the Tropicana for making sure that their property remains part of the ‘Las
Vegas Dream.’”
The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 represents over
60,000 workers including hotel and casino workers on the Las Vegas Strip and at
Downtown properties as well as workers at McCarran
Airport and at industrial laundry
plants throughout Las Vegas. The Culinary Union settled contracts for the
majority of its Las Vegas Strip and Downtown properties during the summer and
fall of 2007. The Tropicana was the last
remaining Las Vegas
property working under a contract extension from 2007.
The Las Vegas Tropicana is owned
and operated by Tropicana Entertainment.
