Before President Obama’s recent speech at Caesars Palace began, he met privately with a group of 25 Culinary Union shop stewards. The stewards described the event as casual, informative and typical of the new president’s determination to listen to what working people have to say. The President focused on issues of interest to working families such as the economy and healthcare. Nevada’s Senior Senator, Harry Reid, was also present and made it clear to the stewards that he is as committed as the President to get legislation passed that is helpful to working families.
President Obama explained to the stewards that he has been hard at work in Washington and with Senator Reid’s help, they will be able to get things done in Congress that will benefit all working Americans. The President made a special point to tell the stewards that Senator Reid will be very helpful to him as the Senate Majority Leader, Harry holds the highest leadership position in the Senate and sets the Senate’s agenda.
“This was no question and answer session as conversation flowed back and forth. When President Obama sat down with us, there was no rush, no rehearsal and we had a forthright conversation with him about issues important to all workers, union and non-union.” Leain Vashon, Culinary Union Vice President, Bell Captain and Chief Shop Steward, Paris Hotel & Casino.
