And 226 is a model of multiculturalism in action. Its 57,000 members hail from over 170 countries and speak more than forty different languages, according to the union. A majority are Latinx, and most are women. Local 226 has helped thousands to prepare for the citizenship exam; it also runs a pharmacy where members and their families fill their prescriptions—for free. These are immigrants who have won power on the job and know how to use it to defend their interests in government.
