Culinary Union Calls on Laxalt to Remove NV from Immigration Lawsuit
Las Vegas, NV - On Tuesday, members of the Culinary Union will participate in a delegation to Attorney General Adam Laxalt’s office demanding an end to the Republican-inspired lawsuit currently blocking the implementation of the new DAPA and expanded DACA programs.
May 19 is the day that DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans) was supposed to go into effect, exactly six months after President Obama first issued his Executive Order on Immigration that granted relief from deportation to millions of immigrants living in the United States.
A politically motivated lawsuit and court decision by a Federal Judge in Texas has put those programs on hold, blocking millions of immigrants from coming forward to register and get work permits through the deferred action programs.
“Families suffer every day because they are being torn apart,” said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, Secretary-Treasurer for the Culinary Union, the largest immigrant organization in Nevada. “It’s time we as a state and as a country do better by these hardworking women and men. We call on Attorney General Laxalt to do the right thing and remove Nevada from the lawsuit.”
The Culinary Union represents workers from 167 countries who speak over 40 languages and is committed to justice for Nevada’s immigrant families.
Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165, Nevada affiliates of UNITE HERE, represent over 55,000 workers in Las Vegas and Reno, including at most of casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. UNITE HERE represents 270,000 workers in gaming, hotel, and food service industries in North America.
