Progressive Groups, Local Attorneys, Labor Organizations, Spanish Language Media and Grassroots Advocates Make Huge Push to Honor Citizenship Day 2015

"Why Wait?” Citizenship Workshop

Saturday, September 19 at 10am: College of Southern Nevada - Cheyenne Campus

Las Vegas, NV – Grassroots advocacy groups across America will help thousands of immigrants become U.S. citizens around Citizenship Day as the White House launches a campaign to raise awareness about naturalization.

A coalition of Nevada organizations are hosting a free citizenship workshop on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the College of Southern Nevada - Cheyenne.

The event is open to all members of the Las Vegas community. Members of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), have generously donated their time and are offering free legal help with citizenship applications.

Also on September 17, the White House will launch a national campaign that will focus on the 10 states with the biggest pool of green card holders eligible to become citizens.

This massive campaign emerged from the White House Task Force on New Americans which developed a coordinated federal strategy to support civic, economic, and linguistic integration of immigrants and refugees – and bolstering state and local efforts to do the same.

According to 2010 Census data, 88,647 residents of Clark County are Legal Permanent Residents or "green card" holders.

Saturday’s event demonstrates the Las Vegas community’s commitment to immigrant families. Organizations will continue to work together to ensure people have access to the services they need as they navigate the path to citizenship.

The Culinary Union is the largest labor union as well as the largest immigrant organization in Nevada, representing hospitality workers who come from 167 countries and speak over 40 languages. The Culinary Union and the national organization UNITE HERE have long campaigned for immigration reform and the rights of immigrant workers, including the Immigrant Workers’ Freedom Ride in 2003, and continues the fight to achieve comprehensive, worker-centered immigration reform.
