Workers to Begin Weekly Pickets Tomorrow

Will be joined by Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance and labor leaders

Las Vegas, NV – After four major protests since January, union workers will begin to picket Deutsche Bank’s The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on weekends starting Friday, August 16. Workers will picket twice a day on Friday, August 16 and again on Saturday, August 17. The pickets will take place from 11-1 and 5-7. On Friday at noon, the workers will be joined by members of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance from across the country.

Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers will also be on the picket line. She is a monumental union leader and has been at the helm of the AFT since 2008.

On behalf of the 2,000 workers in their bargaining unit at the Cosmopolitan, Locals 226 and 165 have proposed contract language on job security and work load that is based on the union standard on the Las Vegas Strip, where the unions represent 50,000 workers at most of the major properties. As of now, management appears uninterested in settling the labor dispute at its 3,000-room luxury casino resort.

Spokespeople, President Weingarten, Johanna Hester (President of APALA), and APALA members will be available for interviews on Friday outside the Cosmopolitan.

Who: Gaming workers, APALA members, APALA President Johanna Hester, and AFT President Randi Weingarten

What: Picket line outside the Cosmopolitan casino

When: Workers will begin picketing at 11am APALA members and President Weingarten will join them at noon and be available for interviews then.

Where: Reporters should plan on conducting interviews at the corner of Harmon and Las Vegas Blvd.
