How Culinary canvassers are changing minds on doorsteps across the Las Vegas Valley

On her doorstep stood Jessie Garduno and Nataly Rocha, canvassers with Culinary Workers Union Local 226. They were campaigning for Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford, who is running for governor, and U.S. Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., who is seeking reelection in Nevada’s 1st Congressional District.

Hundreds of Culinary Union members knock on doors like Snowden’s every election year. In 2024, union leaders said Culinary knocked on more than 900,000 doors. Other groups are canvassing too: Gov. Joe Lombardo’s campaign marked 50,000 doors knocked this past week.

Canvassing is a strategy meant to win elections and increase turnout. But for Culinary member Roxanne Perez-Guzman, that isn’t the only reason to do it.

Perez-Guzman is canvassing for Joe Spica, a Culinary Union member who is running for Assembly District 35. Perez-Guzman canvasses because it connects her with her community.
