Labor Unions Take Their Time in Choosing 2020 Candidates to Endorse

The lack of endorsements among national unions may place a greater emphasis on prominent local unions in early voting states such as Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada, where the Culinary Workers Union remains a powerful force in state politics.

D. Taylor, the president of the Culinary’s parent union Unite Here, said workers in Nevada are in no rush to back a particular candidate. He said many of his members are searching for a candidate who will stick to bread-and-butter issues like improving health care and creating jobs that pay more than the minimum wage.

“It’s worrisome that, at the end of the day, the candidates aren’t speaking about issues of how people survive,” he said.
