📰 Culinary Union: July & August 2020 Newsletter

FIGHT FOR OUR HEALTH, SAFETY, & JOBS
Healthcare: We are fighting for our health by negotiating and demanding casino companies extend health insurance for six months for all workers - whether you are working or not.

Layoffs: Your contract has seniority language which means layoffs must be done in a fair and impartial manner. When business improves and casinos/restaurants/hotels reopen, you will be able to return to work by seniority. We will continue to monitor any layoffs closely and work affected workers to ensure the company follows the contract.

Recall rights:
We are fighting for all workers (union and non-union) throughout the hospitality industry in Nevada to have the right to return to their jobs (if the employee had been laid off/furloughed due to COVID-19) when business reopens. There are agreements already in place regarding extended recall rights for union workers with Wynn, Encore, Hilton Grand Vacations, and Cosmopolitan.

The Culinary Union will continue to negotiate aggressively and take any other steps necessary to ensure workers and their families are protected from the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace.

We have to push these companies to do the right thing. The health and safety of workers and our families is the priority. We made it through the shutdown together and we will make it through this COVID-19 pandemic if we are united.

VICTORY: NEVADA LEGISLATURE PASSES SB4 “ADOLFO FERNANDEZ BILL”
After five months of the Culinary Union having thousands of one-on-one conversations with workers, two different car caravans on the Las Vegas Strip with over 10,000 Nevadans participating, dozens of public comment before the Nevada Gaming Control Board and Gaming Commission, and drafting, researching, and consulting with experts on the health and safety language in the Bill, the Nevada Legislature passed SB4 “Adolfo Fernandez Bill” during the special session.

The bill is named for Culinary Union member Adolfo Fernandez who contracted COVID-19 after being employed as a utility porter on the Las Vegas Strip, and passed away in late June 2020.

Senate Bill 4 will protect all workers in the hospitality industry in Las Vegas and Reno -
wall-to-wall, front-of-the house and back-of-the house, union and non-union, worker and manager - from the Bellagio to Motel 6.

Behind every worker in this state there is a family, and the Culinary Union is proud to have won the best safety standards for all workers in the state’s largest industry. When workers are protected, our entire community - from the hospitality industry to
customers and locals - are protected. YES WE DID!

GREAT NEWS ABOUT YOUR UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS:
During the recent special session of the Nevada Legislature, the Culinary Union fought alongside our partners, Legal Aid of Southern Nevada, to help vulnerable Nevadans stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic by passing a bill that will:
*Extend unemployment benefits by another 7 weeks in Nevada.
*Create new rules to allow workers at higher risk for COVID-19 (65 or older or with certain underlying medical conditions) to stay on unemployment instead of having to return to work.

Victory! The bill was signed into law by Governor Sisolak on August 6! We will keep you updated as to when the new rules go into effect.

As the Culinary Union continues to help you with unemployment, our Culinary & Bartenders Unions Legal Service Fund will be working closely with the new Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation (DETR) task force appointed by Governor Sisolak to get pending claims paid ASAP. If you have already called the Culinary Union or Legal Aid about your unemployment case, you don’t need to do anything more right now. We will provide your information to the DETR task force to help you get paid as soon as possible.

NEVADA PATIENT PROTECTION COMMISSION
In the 2019 Nevada Legislative session, the Culinary Union fought for and won legislation to establish the Patient Protection Commission, a group of health care industry experts and patient advocates - including our Culinary Health Fund - appointed by the Governor.

The Patient Protection Commission is a victory for working families as its goals are to protect patients from getting ripped off as the price of healthcare rises every day.
In July and August 2020, Culinary Union members shared their healthcare system experiences with the Patient Protection Commission to help improve the future of care in Nevada.

Culinary Union members shared their personal stories ranging from being COVID-19 patients to navigating tele-health during a pandemic. The Culinary Union will always fight to protect and improve our healthcare. WE FIGHT. WE WIN!

NOSOTROS PELEAMOS. ¡NOSOTROS GANAMOS!

CONGRESSMAN JOHN LEWIS
The Culinary Union is proud to have fought alongside our dear friend,
Congressman John Lewis, for decades. He was an incredible hero who always stood with and fought for working people in the struggle for equality and justice.

We are grateful for his leadership, fearless courage, years of sacrifice for justice, and support throughout the 6 years, 4 months, and 10 days Frontier Strike through the present-day organizing drive at Stations Casinos.

As we celebrate Congressman Lewis’ legacy, the Culinary Union will strive to carry on the work every day to make Nevada a place where working families can organize and win for our collective liberation.

Rest in power, brother.
