Meet Lenore, a 54-year Culinary Union member!

As the nation reflects on Labor Day and the many sacrifices it takes to win workers' rights in the U.S., the Culinary Union would like to share 54-year member, Lenore’s, contributions to Las Vegas labor history:

“My first Culinary Union job was as a waitress at the Mint in Downtown Las Vegas. When I got home from my first day of work, I told my husband that I actually had a break for the first time in my life. He replied to me: “Welcome to the Union.” I also worked at the Golden Gate, Landmark, and Stardust, but the most transformational years of my union activity happened at the Tropicana, where I worked at the coffee shop for 20 years.

During that time, the 1984 strike for wages, healthcare, and a pension was underway. After the strike ended, workers were still in crisis. That was a wake-up call for me and I realized I needed to do more than just pay union dues. I quickly became a committee member and shop steward. One of the biggest challenges I faced as a shop steward was member complaints about paying union dues in a right-to-work state such as Nevada. I would tell them: “It seems like you just want the gravy, but you don’t want to stir. How are we going to hire lawyers to fight big corporations? How are we going to hire staff for the Grievance Department to enforce the contract terms?”

“Without a doubt, the most unforgettable moment of my shop steward years happened when I went to the Frontier picket line during the historic strike. I would go every Friday. During 6 years, 4 months, and 10 days, Culinary Union members stuck together like glue and we knew we were not going to be defeated. We were fighting the good fight. I have incredible respect for the strikers because they were so brave and sacrificed so much

Being part of the Culinary Union, the most brilliant Union in the country, has given me positivity, a “Si Se Puede” attitude. It has built my self-esteem. Today, I know I have a better life because I’ve been a Culinary Union member. I have a Union pension which makes me feel like secure - I can retire with dignity after many years of working hard.”
