In honor of the 29th anniversary of one of the longest and most successful modern day labor strikes in American history, the Frontier Strike, the Culinary Union will premiere the “One Day Longer” video from our archives on Facebook!
“One Day Longer” tells the story of the Frontier Strike which began on September 21, 1991. At the beginning of the strike 550 hospitality workers walked off their jobs at the Frontier Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada to protest unfair wages and treatment. The strike line was maintained 24/7 and not one striker ever crossed the line.
The Frontier Strike ended six years, four months, and ten days later on February 1, 1998, when Phil Ruffin bought the resort from Margaret Elardi. The Culinary Union was able to negotiate that original workers were brought back to their jobs and workers were provided back pay and benefits! During the course of the strike, 17 strikers passed away and 107 children were born.
“The Frontier Strike was a major victory for working men and women in Nevada,” said Geoconda Argüello-Kline, Secretary-Treasurer of the Culinary Union, who was a lead organizer during the historic strike. “I will never forget the courageous strikers - who with blood, sweat, and tears - sacrificed and maintained that picket line every day for six years, four months, and ten days.”

"Un Dia Mas" cuenta la historia de la huelga del Frontier que comenzó el 21 de septiembre de 1991. Al comienzo de la huelga, 550 trabajadores de la industria hotelera abandonaron sus trabajos en el Hotel y Casino Frontier en Las Vegas, Nevada para protestar contra los salarios y el trato injusto. La línea de la huelga se mantuvo 24 horas al día, los 7 días a la semana y ni un solo huelguista en ningún momento cruzó la línea.
La huelga del Frontier terminó seis años, cuatro meses y diez días después, el 1 de febrero de 1998, cuando Phil Ruffin le compró el resort a Margaret Elardi. ¡La Unión Culinaria pudo negociar que los trabajadores originales fueran devueltos a sus puestos de trabajo y que los trabajadores recibieran pagos salarios atrasados y beneficios! Durante el transcurso de la huelga, murieron 17 huelguistas y nacieron 107 niños.
